Reach your Goals In 2012

How are your 2012 New Year Resolutions Faring? Are you going to achieve your Resolution Golds in the Olympic 2012 Year?

By the time you see this first edition of EN Magazine in 2012 you will have had at least one month to progress your New Year Resolutions. Chances are that they will have already fallen foul of the grey skies of January – a particularly hard month to make life changes as the weather is gloomy and we are all feeling rather flat after the bright Christmas and New Year’s festivities.

Some of you might not even have made New Year Resolutions this year. Who could blame you, with all the gloomy media predictions about the UK and EU economies, and the news, in particular, about record job losses in 2011/12? Best perhaps to keep your head down and be grateful that you have a job at all? Or concentrate solely on getting a job rather than a job you will enjoy, if you are one of the many who are not presently in work?

So what is the point of my title question and reading on? Well, I think that we all deserve the opportunity to take ‘me time’ every now and again, no matter how busy our lives, and we all deserve to aspire to be the very best that we can. So I am going to help you achieve your own Olympic Gold goals in 2012.

Based on the principles of coaching top athletes and many years’ experience in performance and life coaching, as well as mentoring, I am going to suggest a simple approach that is proven to significantly increase your chances of making lasting improvements to key areas of your life.
First, do not repeat, especially word for word, any resolution that you have made in previous years and have quickly forgotten or abandoned well before Spring. Only make positively worded resolutions. Then you will be setting yourself up to succeed and not to fail. Also, do not think that you have missed the boat for 2012. Who says that the first week in January is the only time you can make Resolutions?

Take some ‘me time’ in a quiet place away from the noise and pressures of every day life to think about what is really important for you to achieve by January 2013 (or any other date that seems more realistic for your circumstances). Imagine how you will feel when you successfully make each of those desired changes. Compare that warm positive feeling with how you might feel if you do not succeed; whether by not trying at all, by lack of determination or by setting too high a threshold for yourself.

Compile a long list of possible resolutions if you wish, but be sure to hone that list down to those Resolutions which you really want to achieve: your Olympic Gold’s. Then, choose to set yourself no more than three realistic and positively worded resolutions to tackle in 2012. Write them down and include your desired end state, for example, I will be a healthy eater by the end 2012 and have better toned muscles.

Always set yourself some interim milestones to check and if necessary, adjust your progress along the way. Include monthly review dates in your diary now, so that you take time to do this key step. This will ensure that you do not simply forget about your resolutions or get distracted from your focus. Which inevitably will lead to experiencing the disappointment and failure, at a time when you will want to feel good about yourself and your future.

If you take this approach, your brain will start working immediately to support you by filtering in any key information or ideas to help you achieve all your Gold’s. You will be surprised at how much support is available to you, from family, friends, the internet and support groups. You will achieve positive affirmation that you are doing well every time you achieve either a small step or a long stride towards your goals and this will help drive you further forward.

I suggest that you also decide to give yourself a small reward for each milestone achieved or surpassed during 2012. You will certainly deserve a treat for working hard along the way to achievement and deciding what those treats might be for you in advance – and visualising them when the going gets tough – will help enormously towards achieving your milestones. They will be fun to do in themselves.

Treats need not be expensive if money is tight, why not reward yourself with a luxurious soak in a scented candlelit bath room or by listening to nature’s songs on a brisk country walk? Be creative in your choice of rewards and stick pictures representing your imagined goals and celebratory treats on the fridge door, to inspire you every time you open it or pass by to do the washing up!

Throughout the year it is very important that you do not let yourself be distracted from moving steadily forward towards your chosen Goals by other demands; negative remarks from others; or your own negative thoughts. Think only positively; enjoy and celebrate what you achieve at each stage; and remember always that you deserve to succeed – no matter how gloomy the outlook, the economy or the weather – and you will find that you do achieve whatever is most important for you in 2012. You will have your Olympic Golds.

Keeping Your Home and Belongings Safe

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is urging homeowners and tenants to take simple steps to guard against the risk of being targeted by burglars this winter.

As the Met launches its seasonal awareness campaign, new data demonstrates how people become more vulnerable to burglars during the winter months. Last year offences increased by one third [34 per cent] between November 2010 and February 2011 [average 194 offences per day] compared to April to August 2010 [average 145 offences per day].

As evenings get darker, burglars are on the prowl for valuables and cash, recognising that homes tend to be getting ready for seasonal celebrations and may have gifts and items around and on display.

During this period, properties remain in darkness for much longer periods which make them easier to target, especially if there are no obvious signs there is anyone home.

Advice to Londoners includes:

Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes.

Make sure you do not leave your car keys, valuables or ID documents near a door, letterbox or window.

Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home

Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house or flat number or the first three letters of your house name.

Commander Christine Jones said: “Being burgled is a distressing experience and the memory of the offence can have a lasting effect.”

“The Met takes burglary seriously – we want people to feel safe in their homes and in their communities and we are working hard to pursue those responsible and bring them to justice. As part of our commitment, we are determined to raise people’s awareness of security with our latest campaign and help stop burglary from happening in the first place.

“Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime, with 36 per cent of burglaries resulting from insecure premises.

“A burglar will select their target because it offers them the best opportunity to carry out their crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in their way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured.

“Don’t let your home become a target. Help us to help you to protect your home by taking simple steps such as using timers to turn lights and radios on; fitting alarms; making sure homes are locked before going out and keeping valuables and presents out of view.

“I urge Londoners to find out more by visiting our dedicated page on our Met website www.metbumblebee.org .”

Safer Neighbourhoods Teams are also available to advise the public about the security of their property.

For more crime prevention tips and advice on how to make your home secure visit http://www.metbumblebee.org or contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team. In an emergency, always dial 999.

Events bring out the crowds in Enfield

After the problems that had blighted Enfield over the last few weeks the local community showed what Enfield is really about at the weekend.

The Enfield Town show was a fantastic success, the sunshine defiantly helped to bring out the crowds on Saturday. The rain, although damping the ground could not dampen the sprits of the visitors and exhibitors on the Sunday. Many local businesses took the opportunity to appear at the Enfield Town Show, showing their support for the area. The We Love Enfield campaign, stated by Fastsigns could be seen on stickers bags and the faces of visitors everywhere.

On Sunday Capel Manor hosted the annual Vintage Car show. This year the event had more cars than ever before and was a great success for visitors to the car show and the gardens saying what a wonderful day even with the rain.

Both of these events were supported by local residents and people from outside the area showing that Enfield really is a fantastic place to be.

Watch this space for some exciting news of a new event taking place in Potters Bar at the end of the month which may well turn you “green” with envy if you do not get involved.

In Shock Of What Has Been Going On

The last few days I have woken in shock to the news of a minority of people causing mass destruction and looting throughout London.

My thoughts are with all the people who find themselves without a place of work, or instead of a nice save shop or office they have a premises in ruins. These people are indiscriminate in who they target, big business of small.

I hope that people throughout London will get behind their local businesses and support them as they try to rebuild the livelihoods of owners and staff alike.

For all the people that now find themselves homeless and have lost possessions I hope that people will rally round to help you.

These people that are inflicting this on London I hope will be round up and prosecuted under the full force of the law.

However life must go on and we must not let these people destroy the good things that we have.

EN Magazine is pleased to let our readers know that we have a new writer joining our team – Tom the Gardener.

Tom who works at Capel Manor Gardens will be sharing is advice and knowledge with our readers on all things gardening.

We are busy working on the Autumn issues and would like to hear from any of our readers that have ideas for articles that you would find interesting – drop us an email at editorial@enmagazine.co.uk

In the September issue we will have a report on Fostering in the local community. We meet up with some local foster careers and find out first hand the fantastic work that they do. I think this article will change many readers perception of foster care.
