The event will be held at Southbury Leisure centre on Friday 10 February between 10am and 3pm. It will bring together over 40 companies and training providers to offer opportunities to job seekers in Enfield. Nick de Bois was the first MP in the country to organise a Jobs Fair last January and with 1,200 people attending, the pioneering format has been copied across Britain.

Big names attending this year include BT, Tesco, Virgin Media, Sainsbury’s, Barclays and Greggs, as well as local big-hitters Winchmore Brickwork, Johnson Matthey and Barclay Bros.· With the event coinciding with the final day of Apprenticeships Week, many of the companies attending will have apprenticeship places on offer.

Nick said, "As an MP I can’t create jobs, but I can bring together companies looking for staff and people looking for jobs”.

He added, “You could see from the huge turnout at last year’s event that jobseekers in Enfield are highly motivated about getting back into work. The Enfield Jobs Fair is all about creating opportunities for people and we estimate to have around 750 jobs on offer.”

London Mayor Boris Johnson will be opening the event at 10am, and people do not have to register in advance to attend. News updates can be found on twitter by following @nickdebois and @EnfieldJobsFair, with an Enfield Jobs Fair 2012 Facebook page [

Search begins for 10,000 Olympic Games Ceremony performers

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has today begun a search for volunteer performers to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Artistic Directors Danny Boyle and Kim Gavin are searching for 10,000 volunteers to fill roles as dancers, actors, percussionists and general all-round performers in the Ceremonies. Volunteers must be aged 18 years or over on 1 March 2012.

Successful applications will perform in what will be one of the largest events ever staged in the UK, in front of a packed audience in the Olympic Stadium and a worldwide broadcast audience of more than one billion people.

Potential applicants can find more information and register their interest for this opportunity by completing an online application form <http://www.london2012.com/ceremoniescasting> . The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31 August 2011.

Applicants must be able to participate in up to two auditions that will take place in November and early December this year, in up to three rehearsals of four hours each every week from March 2012, and in a number of all-day rehearsals in the three weeks leading up to each Ceremony. All of these rehearsals will take place in east London.
Only one application per person will be accepted, and if LOCOG receives over 15,000 applications, a computerised draw will be used to randomly create the short list for auditions.

Bill Morris, LOCOG Director of Ceremonies, Education and Live Sites, said: 'To deliver Ceremonies of this scale, a significant amount of time commitment is required from the volunteer performers. Performers will be required to attend up to two or three rehearsals each week in London from March 2012 so applicants should consider this.

'Previous performance experience is not required for people to apply, applicants simply need lots of enthusiasm, personality, a positive attitude, huge amounts of energy and a willingness to perform in front of a stadium audience and to millions of people around the world.'

O’Yea, O’Yea democracy works

O’Yea, O’Yea Democracy Week is underway as Enfield’s historic medieval Market Square becomes the centre of attention next Thursday.

With town crier Peter Frost attracting a crowd to the bandstand, local councillors and council officers are promoting the benefits of local democracy meeting and greeting residents, shoppers, and school students.

They will be handing out leaflets and telling people how they can get involved in public life. This can be attending council meetings, going to area forums, becoming school governors or taking up the political call to try and become a councillor or MP.

Council Leader, Doug Taylor, said, “'I believe that we need to increase the involvement of people in what affects their lives. Councils are the local example of a structure where significant decisions are made which impact on all our lives. The quality of decisions is only advanced by people taking an interest and we want to encourage that.”

Date – Tuesday 11th October 2011

Time – 10.00am till 4.00pm·

Venue – Southbury Leisure Centre, 192 Southbury Road, Enfield, EN1 1YP·

Enfield Council is running a special event on October 11 to coincide with World Mental Health Day on October 10, which is an internationally recognised day, designed to promote greater awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding mental health such as depression, anxiety and problems relating to stress.

Dr Shahed Ahmad, Director of Public Health said: “A review in 2006 also found that Edmonton had the highest level of mental health hospital admissions in Enfield, and that residents of Edmonton had the highest levels of psychiatric illness and schizophrenia in the borough.

“People with mental health issues have as much right to work and to support in the workplace, indeed work is excellent for our physical and mental health and should be encouraged.

“Everyone interested in mental wellbeing should attend.”

The theme of this year’s event is Mental Health Employment and Wellbeing. The event aims to raise the awareness of mental health issues in the workplace and the importance of mental and physical wellbeing, while offering organisations a chance to show their commitment to taking a supportive and positive approach to mental health in the workplace.

The event will feature presentations from local and national expert speakers with question and answer sessions, an exhibition with a variety of stands from employment services, training and education providers and service user and carer support groups. There will also be workshops, complementary therapies and salsa and zumba taster sessions.

Enfield library service needs your views

Residents are being urged to take part in Enfield Council’s consultation on what services should be offered in Enfield’s libraries..

The consultation, which ends on Sunday 2nd October, asks for views about the range of services on offer and what should be the Council’s service priorities.

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, cabinet member for leisure services, said: "This is an opportunity for residents to tell us what they want from their library service in the coming years. The Council is committed to listening to the views of local people before any decisions are taken."

Consultation documents are available at all libraries, the Dugdale Centre, selected children's centres and leisure centres, Community House in Edmonton, John Wilkes House in Ponders End and the Enfield Civic Centre.

There are bright orange boxes in all libraries for people to post their views or they can find the consultation online at: www.enfield.gov.uk/librariesconsultation.

All the responses will be considered before the Council produces a new library strategy in December.

In recent years modernisation has enabled library customers to make greater use of web and ICT services to carry out transactions from their home computers.

Children, students and adults are able to access resources from home using their library card rather than visit a traditional reference library, although visits have increased over the last two years.

Job clubs and learning centres also form part of the library service providing valuable support for children’s literacy and reading projects.

Fresh Bread and Lots More Served Up Daily

A husband and wife team have given up successful professional careers… to bake bread.

Richard Copsey was working as a Spanish teacher, at Dame Alice Owens School, Potters Bar, and Kate Smith was at polling experts Ipsos MORI when they decided that what they really wanted to do was feed people.

“I have always had a passion for cooking and a few years ago I started baking my own breads.” Richard told EN Magazine. “Friends and family would come round and try my bread and ask me to bake some for them. Before long word quickly spread and within months· I had a small production line going serving the local area.”

“Now we have taken the plunge and opened up our own shop on Chase Side Enfield.”

Richard, who bakes the bread, and Kate, who specialises in home-made cakes, have now completed the transformation of Holtwhites Bakery & Deli and which opened to the public on Saturday July 2.

Richard, 39, said: “Demand for our bread has been fantastic. People are tired of “pappy” commercially produced bread and want something that not only looks good but tastes delicious. We use wonderful organic flour and we give our dough plenty of time to rise. This results in naturally delicious bread that is a world away from anything available in supermarkets.”

The bakery offers a range of breads from white, multi grain and brown loaves and rolls as well as specialist breads available daily as well as daily specials such as chocolate bread, olive bread and rye breads.

Kate, 34, added: “We have had comments from the public and customers about the wonderful smell of real, freshly baked bread drifting through the air in Enfield again.”

Richard and Kate hope that their bakery and deli will appeal to local residents and workers as well as foodies from afar who are in pursuit of great produce.

Their artisan breads, pastries and cakes are hand-crafted and baked daily on the premises using only natural ingredients, traditional baking methods and an obsession with quality. To accompany their baked goods, they have carefully selected a range of deli items including farmhouse cheeses, charcuterie, wines, whole leaf teas and hand roasted coffees.

EN Magazine went along to the opening of Holtwhites Bakery and Deli to try out the breads on offer.

“It was great to see that the opening of the new bakery was well supported with customers queuing out the door. I was able to buy both a selection of rolls and a multigrain loaf. However the selections of cheese and pates were all too tempting and I had to buy some. I was really pleased that the price of the loaf was comparable to that paid in a supermarket, starting from £1.90 for a large loaf”

“The bread was still warm when I got home and with just a coating of butter on a slice it tasted fantastic. Two days later and I am still munching my way through my loaf, cheese and pate. I will definitely be returning to Holtwhites Bakery and Deli for my bread in the future.”

Enfield’s young people condemn the riots

Council Leader promises support for the community

All 20 members of Enfield’s Youth Parliament, representing thousands of young people in the borough, have condemned the recent riots in Enfield and across the country saying:

"We are shocked and appalled by the destruction that has been caused by a small group of trouble makers, who are entirely unrepresentative of a majority of young people in Enfield.

“This behaviour is utterly unacceptable and only damages the perception of Enfield, our communities and young people as a whole. We hope that the violence comes to an end immediately and that we can take steps to ensure that this is not repeated again in Enfield.”

Council Leader, Doug Taylor, applauded the young people and promised that the Council will continue to support all young people in every way that it can.

He said, “We have strengthened our youth support service with a massive programme of free summer courses and activities and continue to build on the good work going on in all our youth centres.

As we launch our ‘Respect for Enfield’ campaign, now is the time for the whole community to declare our borough a ‘no go’ zone for all those intent on causing trouble.

“We will work with the community and local groups to ensure that our borough is safe for everyone and that it can offer opportunities for all our young people.”

Doug Taylor, Leader of Enfield Council says, “I am appalled by the mindless violence we witnessed in Enfield last night. ·There is no justification for such behaviour which was an attack on Enfield, its people and its businesses. ·It is important now that the whole community pulls together, remains calm and moves forward.

“I will be organising meetings with Enfield’s community leaders to try address their concerns and see whether there are any lessons to be learnt. Enfield is an area with deprivation and we know that can be linked to crime and we need to address that, but that is not an excuse for looting and wanton destruction.

“I would like to thank the police for their efforts in protecting life and striving to safeguard property. ·The Council will be working with the police to ensure our residents are safe and secure and maintain a strong community.”

A NIGHT TO FORGET

Like, I think every resident of Enfield I am waking up in shock and disgust at the disturbances caused in and around Enfield Town last night and in other parts of London.

To watch video’s of mindless thugs running around Enfield throwing bricks at police and smashing shops for the purpose of looting disgusted me.

However I believe that the Enfield Community is stronger than these idiots.

For the last four years I have published EN Magazine and got to know the local community, both residents and shopkeepers.

Today I would urge people to show that we are a strong community and stand-up and show our support for the local business that have had their premises damaged, and those that through no fault of their own find today they are unable to open their business.

Lets get together and show we are a strong community and help the business survive through this tragic event.

Residents Fight To Keep The Right To Park On The Street For Free

Enfield residents have contacted EN Magazine to ask us to help raise awareness of the consultation by Enfield Council into the proposed introduction of an increased Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) around Enfield Town.

Residents who would like to contribute to the consultation on the proposed expansion need to contact the council by the 5th August. Contact details can be found at www.saynotocpz.org.uk

Local residents researching the proposals by seeking information from Council officers and websites have found out many things that were not made clear in the consultation document.

The previously unknown information, they discovered, for included, that:
- money had already been earmarked from the Office of the Mayor of London (Boris Johnson) to fund the introduction of the scheme
- the Council's own officials estimate that the number of parking places in some of our roads will reduce by 23%
- the Council is already selling "commuter permits" at £660 per annum
- owners of a commuter permit will be able to park in any residents' parking bay, in some areas of the borough
- holders of residents' permits from other areas of Enfield will also be able to park in bays anywhere in the borough
- visitors' permits would only be for a morning or an afternoon period so that anyone receiving a whole-day visit would need to buy 2 permits
- traders permits would further inhibit parking - but would possibly also inhibit trade. ·One of our local traders, for example, would be forced to pay £13000 to keep his 20 gardening vans active around Enfield.
- people who have had experience of controlled parking in their own streets have contacted the protest organisers to warn them of the consequences of agreeing (year-on-year rises in costs, for example)
